There are a number of reasons why donuts are an ideal food to sell at fairs and festivals. Donuts are different from the competition and will give you a leg up on the trailer next door. People at fairs and festivals are used to seeing the same food items offered over and over again, so imagine them seeing your donuts and being interested because it’s outside the ordinary.

The people attending fairs and festivals have food choices limited to the types of concession trailers present. They don’t go to the trouble of bringing something from home when it’s easy to buy something there. Rather than leave to eat and come back later they stay and look for something tasty. That’s where your donuts come in. Your product will be warm and delicious?just what they want! Donuts are also a very convenient food to eat on the go.

When walking around a fair or a festival would you rather eat a corn dog, a hamburger, nachos, a piece of pizza, or a bite-sized donut? Most of those need to be eaten standing still so you don’t make a mess. What about a funnel cake, a fried pie, a turkey legs, or a bite-sized donuts? Most of those don’t wrap up well if you want to eat them later. The donuts are always more convenient and less messy when someone is on the move.

Which would you rather do? Pay several hundred or even thousands of dollars every month with no guarantee in sales or pay less rent for a space with an abundance of foot traffic? That’s something to consider when paying rent for a storefront versus a mobile concession stand. Fairs and festivals have always had good foot traffic for concession vendors as attendees like finding things to eat. And just consider how many fairs and festivals are held in the United States each year. The number is huge meaning you could have as much, or as little, work as you want. Some vendors only work when they want to or need to, and take the rest of the time off.

You will have to petition a committee at each fair and festival to set up your cart, and this can be difficult. Committees usually take those return vendors that have been coming the longest, virtually locking out any new vendors from participating. They have to set a limit on how many concession operators to let in, so you may find yourself put on waiting list after waiting list. Be sure to tell the committee that you will be selling something different as that will get their attention. Committees like to have as many different food options as possible to offer their patrons to help have a more successful (and profitable) fair or festival.
