If you love to grill, you’ve likely seen the Big Green Egg bbq grill. It is a ceramic smoker that can be used as a grill, smoker as well as a brick oven. It is so versatile it is possible to prepare everything from hamburgers and steaks and other standard bbq grill foods to desserts, breads and even pizza.

Eggheads swear by the Big Green Egg, but you might be asking what makes the Egg (as it’s fondly referred to as) different from other barbecue grills.

Possibly the biggest distinction is the appearance. The Big Green Egg is well, green and in the shape of an egg. Although I cannot say the reason why it’s green, I can say that the egg shape appeared to be created (on purpose) to provide the ability to regulate and retain heat inside the barbeque grill better than other grills.

The next largest difference is the material. Instead of being constructed with metal, the Big Green Egg has thick ceramic walls. Ceramic is much more sturdy in comparison with other materials, which means the Egg will last longer than other barbecue grills, it can be cooked on any time of the year (even during unusually cold temperatures). It’s also less dangerous than other grills, particularly when there are small children running around, because the ceramic exterior is much cooler than conventional metal grills plus you always grill with the lid down, which means you don’t have to worry about flare-ups.

There are plenty of other differences but certainly one of my favorite features may be the number of fans the Big Green Egg has. You will find Egg lovers and gatherings throughout the U.S., and Eggheads are willing to share their stories, helpful hints as well as recipes at events as well as on the Egghead forum. I can’t think of another barbeque grill that has such a following.

Now, the Egg does have some shortcomings when compared to other barbecue grills. Such as, it is not an inexpensive grill. You could spend approximately $700 for the large Big Green Egg. In addition, it’s important to use lump wood charcoal, which isn’t always easy to find and is usually a bit more expensive in comparison with traditional charcoal briquettes. The Big Green Egg also has a smaller grilling area compared to many gas grills, meaning you’ll want a backup bbq grill if you’re grilling for a number of people.

Even so, the flexibility of the Big Green Egg, the ability to grill, smoke or bake with your Egg, and the amazing results you will get (the Egg is very forgiving, even for newbie grillers) are well worth the purchase price. If you are a barbecue lover and you do a good deal of smoking in addition to barbecuing you will really enjoy the quality and the results you will get when cooking with the Big Green Egg.

If you are a barbecue enthusiast you will love cooking with the Big Green Egg grill. For more reasons why the Big Green Egg Smoker is our favorite smoker and grill, as well as Big Green Egg accessories you must have, please visit The Big Green Egg Grill & Smoker
