Many of us have read the term Halal Restaurant put up on eateries, but not all of us know what it means. More and more food products and restaurants put up this sign. And although we have an idea that it must have something to do with Islam, we don’t know for sure what it is.

To simplify its meaning, Halal means lawful in Islamic laws. A halal-certified restaurant means our Muslim brothers and sisters can allow themselves to eat in the establishment without fear of breaking any Islamic laws. Being halal-certified means all the ingredients used and the cooking of the menu are in accordance of the rules of Sharia, or the way Muslims should live.

A halal-certified restaurant in a mixed religion country means that it abides by the Islamic laws by its own accord. It’s easy to be a halal eatery in a nation dominated by Muslims, but such is not the case if you are living in a country wherein religions are merged. So that would just mean that a restaurant that is halal-certified prioritizes each and every one of its customers. It goes out of its way to serve all its customers, no matter what faith they belong to.

Even though halal-certified restaurants are multiplying, being one isn’t as easy as merely positioning a sign outside the establishment and declaring they abide by the Islamic laws. It takes meticulous practice from beginning to end. From the slaughtering of its meat to the selection of a meal’s ingredients, to the cooking of the menu.

And if that still sounds simple, it does not stop there. There are many other patterns and rules a restaurant must abide by before it becomes halal-certfiied. Examples include avoiding cross-contamination of products by keeping the utensils and materials used for the preparation of non-halal items away from those being used for halal menu.

A halal restaurant gives patrons more choices. Muslim diners do not have to choose between good food and compromising their religious beliefs. They don’t need to fall for less. That is why a halal restaurant gives more value to their clients.
