Trying to start a small publication in Eastern AZ. It is mostly a literary Journal, that is targeted to the average ages group of 25- 60. I’m having a hard time gettting people to trust me, and to make matters worse, I came up with a sample issue, that included an article about a local Music competition, and to make a long story short, instead of certain businesses hearing: “The Judges said she was too heavy and un-marketable.” They Heard: “I John, the Publisher, who wants your advertising dollars, say she is too heavy and un-marketable.” Now they think I hate fat people!
OMG, Am I doomed!? I have a workshop planned for next Friday, and only five people have RSVP’ed. It is a workshop about advertising, I designed to reel in business, but also to provide very valuable tips. I sent apology letters to the few people I knew for sure had seen the sample issue, is this enough? Darn my Editing! IS it hopeless?

Congratulations! 5 people are better than none! But now is the time to start BROADENING your horizons and start making a serious effort into what you want to accomplish.
Use those 5 people as a springboard and go from there.
If you are a small business, don’t think BIG! Big will only get you killed–because people are going to assume that you are doing too much. And doing too much is a sign of weakness and immaturity in the field you’re trying to grow in.
Me, I want to start up my small publishing company based on my ongoing newsletter in five years or so. But I’m going to start LOCALLY (advertising, marketing, and so forth). And while the internet is a lucrative tool to have, remember that the whole world isn’t going to understand what you are trying to accomplish.
So instead of trying to take on everything at once, sit back and start carving out your own small niche in this corner of the universe–and begin from there.
Things take time to blossom, so don’t rush it.
(Also…switching to de-caf wouldn’t hurt either. Just take a nice…deep…breath…and let it…go…slowly.)
PS- I certainly could use some of what you’re selling right now–as a good resource of information. ANYTHING that can help me out in the long run, would be a real bonus in my book!
