how to summarise article (journal), and write a good essay?
please help i have started a msc in addiction. counselling and psychology. i have to summarise an article on a research programme on attitude change process and their applications to counselling (m heesacker and c mejia-millan). i have no idea on how to summarise this article please help. i need some basic steps. also please could i have some steps to writing a good essay at this academic level. thank you xx

1. Read the abstract of the article. This will give you an excellent general idea of the high points of the article and is, in fact, the summary.
2. Carefully read the entire article. Keep a close eye out for methodological shortcomings and/or flaws in the study. Highlight the parts of the article which you find to be most important (e.g., the study population, how data was gathered and analyzed). Pay very careful attention to the “discussion” section.
3. Re-read and very briefly summarize in your own words, EACH SECTION of the article (e.g., the literature review, method, discussion).
4. Integrate the “mini-summaries” from #3 above.
5. Add you own observations about the shortcomings of the article and include your ideas on how it might be improved.
6. Finally, comment on how/if this article is applicable, and what sorts of future research it should spawn.

-Cross out all the useless sentences that contain metaphors, information that doesn’t relate to the topic, or excess info. This also helps when you are writing something that is too long.
-Find the main idea or “thesis” sentence in each paragraph, combine it with the closing remark and there you have it! Sentence one of your summary. Continue with all meaningful paragraphs that you have not crossed out.
-Once you have your summary, rewrite it in your own words. This can be as simple as changing the order of the sentences or switching around words with synonems.

SUMMARIZE THE RESULTS TO EACH SECTION. USUALLY ARTICLES HAVE THE HYPOTHESIS, TYPE OF STUDY(EXPERIMENTAL, OBSERVATIOANL, CASE, SURVEY, ETC QUANTITIVE AND QUALITATIVE), PARTICIPANTS ( THE NUMBER AND GEOGRAPHICS), METHODS AND MATERIALS USED, RESULTS, CONCLUSION, AND DISCUSSION. You would then, depending on the length of the required essay sumarize it. If its only 5-10 pages you may only want to use a paragraph for each section. If my memories serves me correctly then this methodis correct.
